Understanding Learning Differences
When a bright child is putting in real effort but reading, writing, or math still isn't clicking, the question isn't how hard they're trying — it's what's actually happening underneath. A comprehensive evaluation looks at exactly that: reading, writing, and math, and the cognitive picture underneath, so you know what you're working with.

The signs parents notice

With reading: slow, halting progress even after instruction; difficulty sounding out unfamiliar words; losing the place on the page; reading that costs far more energy than it seems like it should. Spelling that doesn't improve the way you'd expect. A student who can discuss ideas brilliantly but avoids reading aloud at all costs.
With writing: handwriting that's hard to read or laborious to produce; difficulty getting thoughts onto paper even when the ideas are there; avoiding written work; finishing last, every time. With math: difficulty memorizing facts despite repeated practice; trouble keeping numbers organized on the page; losing track of steps in multi-part problems.

The three learning differences
Dyslexia, dysgraphia, and dyscalculia
Each is a specific, brain-based difference with its own signature — and each calls for a different deep-dive in testing. Here's what each one looks like, and what I actually measure.
Reading
Dyslexia
What you might be seeing: Slow, effortful reading that doesn't match how bright your child clearly is. Difficulty sounding out unfamiliar words, spelling that won't stick, and a student who can discuss ideas brilliantly but avoids reading aloud at all costs.
What testing covers: I go underneath the reading itself, into the phonological and linguistic processing systems it's built on: phonological processing, rapid automatized naming, decoding of both real and nonsense words, reading fluency — rate, accuracy, and prosody — spelling, and orthographic processing, alongside a detailed review of school records. The goal isn't to confirm that your child is struggling; it's to isolate why.
Writing
Dysgraphia
What you might be seeing: The telltale pattern: a student who can express sophisticated ideas out loud with ease, but breaks down in organization, spelling, and legibility the moment those ideas have to go on paper. Handwriting that's laborious to produce, written work avoided, assignments finished last every time.
What testing covers: Writing has a physical side and a language side, and dysgraphia can live in either — so I evaluate both: fine motor coordination, visual-motor integration, spelling, and written expression at the sentence and essay level. That's paired with a close, qualitative look at actual work samples — letter formation, spatial organization on the page, and how much effort writing really costs.
Math
Dyscalculia
What you might be seeing: Persistent difficulty with basic numerical concepts: math facts that won't stick despite repeated practice, reliance on finger-counting long after peers have moved on, and math reasoning that doesn't match your child's otherwise strong abilities.
What testing covers: I look at the whole mathematical processing system: core number sense — the intuitive grasp of quantities and how numbers relate — calculation fluency, mathematical and quantitative reasoning, and the working memory needed to hold and manipulate numbers. That's what separates a specific math difference from a student who just needs more practice.
The bigger picture
It's rarely just one thing
A learning difference seldom arrives alone. Dyslexia frequently co-occurs with attention differences — a student working twice as hard to decode every word has very little cognitive bandwidth left for staying on task. Anxiety is common too, often as a secondary response to years of struggling in an environment that didn't have an explanation for the struggle.
Giftedness adds another layer. In twice-exceptional students, high cognitive ability can mask a learning difference for years — strong vocabulary and reasoning compensate just enough that the reading or writing difficulty looks like carelessness, inattention, or attitude rather than a real processing difference. By the time the gap becomes undeniable, a lot of time has passed.
Single-skill testing catches the part you're looking for and misses the rest. Looking at the full picture — learning differences alongside attention, anxiety, and cognitive strengths — is what turns a diagnosis into specific, school-ready recommendations.

A learning difference shows up as a gap between real ability and a specific skill, so I measure both — the skills directly, and the processing underneath them:
Reading
Decoding, reading fluency, and comprehension.
Writing & spelling
Spelling, handwriting, and getting ideas onto the page.

Number sense, calculation, and math reasoning.
Underlying processing
Phonological processing, processing speed, and working memory.

Common questions about learning differences
What ages do you assess?
I work with students of any age, as long as they're currently in school — from about age 6 on through K-12, college, and beyond. If you're not sure whether your student is a fit, reach out and we'll talk it through.
How do you tell a learning difference from a student who's simply behind?
Two things separate them. First, response to instruction: I look at whether your child has had appropriate, consistent teaching and targeted intervention — students who are simply behind usually catch up quickly with targeted help, while students with a true learning difference keep struggling because of how their brain processes. Second, the shape of the profile: a general delay shows flat, consistently low scores across the board, while a specific learning difference shows average to superior abilities in most areas with a distinct, localized processing deficit — like phonological processing — that directly impairs one academic skill. That pattern of strengths and weaknesses is the hallmark.
What is nonverbal learning disability (NVLD), and can you diagnose it?
NVLD is a profile marked by a big gap between strong verbal skills and weaker nonverbal, visual-spatial, and motor skills. These students are often highly articulate with sophisticated vocabularies — but struggle to organize physical space, interpret charts and graphs, read body language and facial expressions, and handle spatially demanding math like geometry. NVLD isn't currently a formal, standalone diagnosis in the DSM-5, so it can't be 'diagnosed' in the traditional sense — instead, I identify and validate it as a distinct cognitive profile by looking at the relationships between processing scores: advanced verbal reasoning alongside significantly lower visual-spatial, spatial-relations, and visual-motor scores.
Will the report support school services or an IEP?
Yes. A written psychoeducational report is the document schools, IEP teams, and 504 coordinators use to establish eligibility and build out accommodations. I write reports that meet those standards and hold up in educational settings — including at the college level, where disability services offices have their own requirements.
Can you assess for dysgraphia and dyscalculia too?
Yes. What does an identified learning difference actually open up for my child?
At school, a formal identification provides the legal and clinical justification for accommodations through a 504 plan or IEP — extended testing time, assistive technology like speech-to-text, reduced homework volume, or specialized instruction — and those same accommodations carry into college-entrance exams like the SAT and ACT, and into university. Just as importantly, it opens a path of self-understanding: when students learn their struggles come from a specific, identified difference rather than a lack of intelligence or effort, it lifts a real burden of shame and anxiety.
